November 7 marks the launch of the Miami Writing Spotlight, a news series that showcases practices, people, and programs that are exemplifying best practices for writing at Miami University.
These individual features put the spotlight on the amazing things being done with writing at Miami and how we at the Howe Center for Writing Excellence have supported these groundbreaking practices, people, and programs. Over time, we’ll showcase a number of best practices in continued support of the culture of writing that has been cultivated at Miami University.
First up in the spotlight is a team of faculty from the History department who completed the Howe Faculty Writing Fellows program in Summer 2017. Read the article or an excerpt below about how History faculty became students again to learn techniques for teaching disciplinary content and best practices in writing.

“It was really helpful to be a student again,” says Assistant Professor of History Lindsay Schakenbach Regele. “I understood what a student feels like when they're being taught something new, when they're doing group work, when they're trying to learn new things—all of that was very powerful.”
“Yeah, it was,” echoes Associate Professor Daniel Prior. “It was powerful.”
After they graduated from the Howe Faculty Writing Fellows program, I interviewed Schakenbach Regele, Prior, and their colleagues, Associate Professor Erik Jensen and Professor and Chair Wietse de Boer, about their experiences. The faculty were part of a team of four from the History department who attended the Howe Faculty Writing Fellows program in Summer 2017.
