Hi, my name is John, and I'm a consultant at the Howe Writing Center. The Howe Writing Center provides undergraduate and graduate writers at Miami with free and helpful feedback on their writing projects. This video introduces the services we offer and how you can take advantage of them.

The Howe Writing Center helps students from all majors with every kind of writing. We can help with any class assignments, such as essays, rhetorical analyses, lab reports, and research reports. We can even help you with presentations, where specially trained consultants help you design your presentation slides, write a script, or help you practice giving your presentation. You can also bring in personal writing, such as resumes and cover letters, writing for organizations, applications, and creative writing.

Some students come to the Writing Center with nothing more than ideas, and they have a consultation where they brainstorm ideas for their writing and create an outline. We work with all stages of the writing process, start to finish.

Writing consultants are undergraduate and graduate students from across the university, just like you. Every writing consultant has taken a specialized English course at Miami to ensure that they are ready to provide you with quality feedback on any type of writing. If you want to learn more about us consultants, we each have a short bio on the Writing Center website and on the scheduling website.

You can expect your consultation to last up to 45 minutes. Be prepared to tell a consultant what goals you have for your writing because you will create an agenda together. That agenda will tell you and your consultant what you want to work on and how you're going to work together to do it. You should not expect your consultant to do the work for you. Instead, your consultant will work with you to achieve your writing goals and give you strategies to continue working outside the consultation. Your consultant will email you notes and reflections after your consultation for you to review as you continue to write.

You can make appointments at King Library on Monday through Thursday from 10 am to 9 pm, on Friday from 10 am to 5 pm, and on Sunday from 1-9 pm. We also have a location in B.E.S.T. Library where you can make appointments Sunday through Wednesday from 4-8 pm. Or at Peabody Hall on Sunday through Thursday, 6-9 pm. We also have select times available online. Live Online consultations allow you to receive live feedback on your writing from a consultant using video or text chat. And Written Online consultations give you feedback posted as comments in the margin of your paper.

Scheduling appointments is easy. You can visit us in person at King Library, give us a call, or use our online scheduling system on our website. See our scheduling video in this series for more help using the system. This and other videos to help you prepare for your consultation, whether on campus or online, are available on the Howe Writing Center website.

If you want to make continued progress on a writing project with the same consultant for 4 weeks or more, you can visit the Recurring Appointments page that shows up under the Appointments tab on the HWC website.

Whether you are brainstorming ideas for your English essay or polishing the final draft of your biology research report, consultants at the Howe Writing Center are here to help. We look forward to working with you!
