Horticulturalist
General Function
Performs a variety of technical and administrative tasks related to growing and maintaining plants on university grounds
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities—Essential Functions
- Grows plants from seeds or cuttings; replants in designated area; waters, weeds, and applies fertilizer, pesticides, water and fungicides.
- Plans and implements landscape settings and floral designs using various plants; may grow plants and provide other assistance in faculty research projects.
- Monitors plants; inspects for disease, insect infestation, or other damage; makes diagnosis for damaged plants and applies appropriate treatment.
- Initiates the purchase of horticultural supplies and equipment; maintains inventory of supplies.
- Maintains files and records of work done; oversees facilities and reports any maintenance problems.
- Oversees student workers; may oversee classified staff; establishes schedule and assigns tasks; sets priorities; monitors and reviews performance.
Reporting Relationships
Direction Received: Horticultural Manager or Instructor/Greenhouse Manager.
Direction Given: Functional guidance to a group of student employees on an ongoing basis; may provide direct supervision to student employees or functional guidance to classified staff.
Minimum Requirements
Requires nine months of training beyond high school in Horticulture and two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Requires pesticide applicator's and driver's license.

Working Conditions
Physical effort usually requires considerable standing, walking, climbing, and operating equipment. Some lifting of materials weighing up to 70 pounds. Periodic assignments given which entail dealing with modestly unpleasant physical situations. There may be considerable noise generated by machine operation and some machinery and chemical usage may present an element of personal risk of injury.
