General Function

Performs administrative and clerical tasks related to providing inventory control over Chemistry department's scientific equipment, materials, and compounds

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities—Essential Functions

  • Assists in the hiring and supervision of all Chemistry Department storerooms staff; maintains OSHA documentation; makes recommendations on discipline and termination; oversees payroll; enters payroll data into computer system and generates reports.
  • Determines supply and material requirements for department annually; makes preparations for bid process.
  • Reviews inventory controls of all storerooms; monitors inventory; reorders any needed supplies or materials from other University storerooms or outside vendors.
  • Assists faculty and graduate students in locating information regarding sources, prices, and catalog numbers of supplies requires for research purposes.
  • Oversees access to restricted access and dangerous materials; coordinates the disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Oversees training and safety program.

Reporting Relationships

Direction Received: Reports to Manager of Laboratory and Administrative Operations and Department Chair

Direction Given: Direct supervision of classified staff (Scientific Stores Specialists)

Minimum Requirements

Requires an associate's degree of 18 months of coursework in chemistry and two years of chemical storeroom/laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Worker Characteristics

  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations
  • Knowledge of inventory and purchasing procedures
  • Knowledge of chemical laboratory procedures
  • Supervisory skills

Working Conditions

Physical effort usually requires considerable walking and standing with some lifting of materials weighing 50 pounds. Somewhat disagreeable working conditions. Some exposure to several unpleasant elements which are particularly disagreeable and pose some hazard of personal risk.
