General Function

Performs a variety of technical tasks related to maintaining a department's computer network and system

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities—Essential Functions

  • Installs and configures hardware and software into department's computer system.
  • Troubleshoots computer problems; investigates and resolves hardware and software difficulties.
  • Trains department users in new software applications.
  • Designs and programs software applications for department use.
  • Performs technical and administrative tasks which may include configuring computers for networking system, providing technical advice, resolving network printer problems, creating documentation, and ordering supplies.
  • May assist in supervising student employees.

Reporting Relationships

Direction Received: Reports to Library Systems Office or Assistant Director of Computer Operations

Direction Given: May provide functional guidance to a group of student employees on an ongoing basis

Minimum Requirements

Requires six months of coursework or training beyond high school in Computer Science and three years experience in maintaining computer networks and systems, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Worker Characteristics

  • Knowledge of computer hardware and software
  • Knowledge of programming and programming languages
  • Knowledge of networking systems

Working Conditions

Periodic assignments given which entail dealing with modestly unpleasant physical situations (i.e. near-continuous use of computer)
