Individual Development Workshops

These workshops are designed to all faculty and staff at all levels within the University who are interested in developing skills for professional growth. Registration is required for participation. The class listing below provides a link to the TRAIN Registration System (login required), which includes the objectives and course description. Please check our website often, as sessions are added frequently. Please note in order to receive credit for these workshops, participants are expected to be present for the entire duration. Completion of these courses may be eligible for credit in the Job Enrichment Program.

Disability Awareness

This interactive workshop will enhance awareness of cultural diversity, personal attitudes, and biases toward people with disabilities, and provide information to better understand the American with Disabilities Act (ADA). Disability Awareness is provided by Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities. *This course may be eligible for JE credit.

Facilitating Effective Meetings

Meetings occur every day on Miami's campus. Some are incredibly productive and move an initiative light years forward, while others drain energy, waste time and money, and leave people feeling frustrated or confused.

The Facilitating Effective Meetings course is designed to help you facilitate an award-winning meeting each and every time you take center stage. With new tools, techniques, and perspective around meetings, your participants will receive the structure, clarity, and purpose that should be the foundation of any meeting.

Microsoft Access 2013

The Microsoft Access 2013 course is designed to help participants know how to:

  • Organize data efficiently
  • Plan and create a database
  • Create, modify, and view tables
  • Create queries and sort and filter results
  • Create, modify, and work with forms
  • Create, modify, and print reports

Microsoft Excel 2013 Basic

The Microsoft Excel 2013 Basic course is designed to help participants become proficient in using Microsoft Excel to create basic worksheets and charts for data tracking and reporting. Topics covered include:

  • Entering and editing data
  • Making basic modifications to a worksheet
  • Using basic functions
  • Formatting cells
  • Creating basic charts
  • Printing worksheets

Microsoft Excel 2013 Intermediate

The Microsoft Excel 2013 Intermediate course is designed to help participants become proficient in performing the following intermediate tasks:

  • Outlining and consolidating data
  • Creating subtotals
  • Sorting and filtering data
  • Creating multi-worksheet formulas
  • Using special formatting options
  • Using range names in formulas
  • Using error tracing features
  • Protecting worksheets
  • Linking worksheets and workbooks

Microsoft Excel 2013 Advanced

The Microsoft Excel 2013 Advanced course is designed to help participants become proficient in performing the following advanced tasks:

  • Using logical, statistical, financial, and date functions
  • Working with data tables
  • Validating cell entries and using advanced filters
  • Creating advanced charts
  • Working with PivotTables
  • Exporting and importing data
  • Performing what-if analyses
  • Recording macros

Participants should be familiar with Excel 2013 intermediate-level tasks such as sorting data, linking worksheets, and outlining and consolidating data.

Presentation Skills

Everyone makes presentations (formal or informal) in their normal work routines. These presentations can be targeted towards direct reports, peers and colleagues, supervisors, and leaders, or to customers and vendors.

In the Effective Presentation Skills course, participants will learn techniques to:

  • Prepare for a presentation
  • Create an organized presentation
  • Deliver an impactful presentation

Participants will also gain tips for increasing confidence, controlling nervousness and connecting with the audience. A small class size allows participants the opportunity to practice presenting in a safe, non-competitive environment.
