    • Full-time Trades Assistants or Trades Specialists are eligible in accordance with program requirements.
    • Half-time Trades Assistants or Trades Specialists may participate with some restrictions.
    • Temporary and intermittent Trades Assistants or Trades Specialists are not eligible to participate in the Skilled Trades Apprenticeship.
    • University Retirees rehired by the University are not eligible to participate in the Skilled Trades Apprenticeship.

Participation in the Skilled Trades Apprenticeship is voluntary and requires an application be filled out. The application process is as follows:

  • The JEP application must be submitted online through MyCard.
  • Upon receipt of the application and verification of all required prerequisites, the JEP Administrator will contact the supervisor/director provided in the application for participation approval/denial.
  • The JEP Administrator will notify the staff member via email of their approval/denial into the JEP and provide information regarding their placement in the Skilled Trades Apprenticeship. If you have not heard from the JEP Administrator within two weeks of applying, please contact the Staff Development Office.
  • Trades Assistants or Trades Specialists may view their JEP/Skilled Trades Apprenticeship records and progress online in MyCard.

Skilled Trades Apprenticeship Learning Opportunities

Miami University Staff Development has partnered with PennFoster and NCCER to provide Learning Opportunities for Trades Assistants and Trades Specialists. Learning opportunities are provided upon meeting with the appropriate JEP Administrator. Modifications may be made based on the business needs of the University and/or vendor changes.

All eligible coursework must be completed while employed at Miami University as a classified staff member. Credit will not be issued for courses completed prior to being accepted into the Skilled Trades Apprenticeship. All eligible courses must also include a tested learning outcome. Skilled Trades Apprenticeship participants may be awarded credit for two non-tested learning opportunities earning up to a combined maximum of 40 total points per calendar year, pending the course approval process. This may include conferences, seminars, webinars, etc.

Upon completing PennFoster or NCCER curriculum, other JEP learning opportunities may be available for Skilled Trades Assistants and Specialists. Contact your JEP Administrator before participating in any other learning opportunity.

Courses not listed may be considered for Skilled Trades Apprenticeship credit by completing the Course Approval/Point Request Form and attaching the necessary documentation as listed on the form. Course approval requests will be reviewed by JEP Administrators. All decisions are final.

Job Enrichment process and credit requirements:

  • The course must be listed under learning opportunities.
  • You must obtain a passing grade for the course.
  • The Course Approval/Point Request Form with appropriate documentation must be submitted (apprenticeship points do not expire).

NCCER

The training programs offered by NCCER meet national industry standards. Modules may be completed at home and at the participant’s pace. The course completion timeframe may vary for each module. See your Job Enrichment Program Administrator for details.

Access: Contact your JEP Administrator.

Job Enrichment process and credit requirements:

  • The course must be listed under learning opportunities.
  • You must obtain a passing grade for the course.
  • The Course Approval/Point Request Form with appropriate documentation must be submitted (apprenticeship program points do not expire).

Course Approval/Point Request Form Process

This form is used for both course approval requests and point requests in the Skilled Trades Apprenticeship. The purpose and process of each request are outlined below.

If requesting Job Enrichment points for an approved learning opportunity:

  • Complete Course Approval/Point Request form.
  • Submit the form with required documentation (listed on form) to JEP Administrator, 125 Staff Development Center.
  • The JEP Administrator will award appropriate credit and update MyCard record for the participant.

For courses not listed under learning opportunities, a request for course approval must be made prior to taking a course, as the Job Enrichment credit decision (approved or not approved) may affect the person’s desire to take the course. To request course approval for these courses:

  • Complete Course Approval/Point Request form.
  • Submit the form with required documentation (listed on form) to JEP Administrator, 125 Staff Development Center.
  • Course Approval request will be reviewed by all JEP Administrators and decision will be communicated to the participant via email.
  • If the course is approved, the participant will need to complete and submit the Course Approval/Point Request form again upon completion of the course (providing required documentation) to obtain point credit.
  • The JEP Administrator will award appropriate credit and update MyCard record.

Requesting both course approval (for a learning opportunity not listed) and points to be applied. The request is being made after taking the course as the Job Enrichment credit decision (approved or not approved) does not affect person’s desire to take the course (i.e., person completing degree program and requesting courses to be considered for credit). Complete the following steps:

  • Complete Course Approval/Point Request form.
  • Submit the form with required documentation (listed on form) to the JEP Administrator, 125 Staff Development Center.
  • Course Approval/Point Request will be reviewed by all JEP Administrators and decision will be communicated to the participant via email.
  • If the course is approved, the JEP Administrator will award appropriate credit and update MyCard record.

Apprenticeship Program Experience Log Requirements

Participants are required to complete and submit an Apprenticeship Log in order to receive an award in the Skilled Trades Apprenticeship Program. The Apprenticeship Program Experience Log requirements are as follows:

  • Must have a total of 200 hours per Apprenticeship Bonus.
  • Each skill category must contain at least 20 hours of documented work time.
  • Submit log to JEP Administrator, 125 Staff Development Center.
  • The JEP Administrator will verify log hours and update MyCard record.
