Security awareness at Miami University: A continued tradition

by Elizabeth Jenike, IT Services

Because October is Cyber Security Awareness Month, we spent the last few weeks filling inboxes with information about passwords, multi-factor authentication, and Wi-Fi security. Our efforts to improve awareness across campus aren’t relegated to the digital realm, either—we sent our Security, Compliance, and Risk Management team to the streets to spread the word.

Since 2006, the SCRM group has hosted security awareness events across all three Miami campuses. In its inaugural year, Security Awareness at Miami University kicked off with a panel presentation about cybersecurity with the vice president and chief information officer and security officers at the time. They gave away iPod Nano devices at those first events!

This year, there were four Security Awareness events: two in Oxford, one on the Hamilton campus, and one on the Middletown campus. Connie Johnson, interim manager of security, compliance, and risk management; Tony Kinne, security engineer; and various IT team members staffed the booth.

We asked passing students, faculty, and staff to answer true/false questions about cybersecurity, and the majority of them didn’t disappoint. People really know their security facts! We also answered questions about Duo, our new two-factor authentication solution, and gave out webcam covers. We met new friends as well!

All in all, Miami continues to gain in terms of security awareness thanks to events like these. We’ll see you there next October!

Save the date! ShredFest 2019 is on the books

Each year, IT Services partners with the Office of General Counsel to sponsor ShredFest. We ask the Miami community to bring us their old files to watch them get eviscerated by a giant shredder. In 2018, we shredded nearly 10,000 pounds of paper!

Next year’s dates have been announced:

Middletown Campus: April 22, 2019 from 9 to 11 am

Hamilton Campus: April 22, 2019 from 1 to 3 pm

Oxford Campus: May 16, 2019 from 12:30 to 3:30 pm

See you there!
