Miami celebrates those students who will be the first in their family to earn a Bachelor's degree. Miami Firsts is a community of students, faculty, staff, and alumni who identify as the first generation in their family to complete a four- year college degree.

As a member of this community, students will have access to the following opportunities:

  • Membership in the Miami Firsts Student Organization – the organization serves as a social hub where Miami Firsts can connect and network with one another. Additionally the organization offers peer mentoring, professional development, and mutual support.
  • Participation in the Faculty/Staff Mentoring Program – participants may choose to be matched with a mentor who is member of Miami’s faculty or staff who also identifies as a first generation college student. Students will have the opportunity to meet their Mentors at a Meet & Greet Pizza Party.
  • Miami Firsts Day – A day of celebration where all Miami Firsts including faculty, staff students, alumni, and allies are invited to come together to participate in an activity or event.
  • Advocacy – Miami Firsts have a point of contact in the Student Success Center who provides advocacy, guidance, and support with the goal of helping to eliminate any barriers a student might face with respect to college persistence and completion.
