Miami Receives Beckman Scholars Program Award

Miami University has been granted a Beckman Scholars Program award from the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation to support undergraduate research and comprehensive faculty mentoring for select undergraduates in chemistry, biochemistry and the biological sciences. 

Miami is one of nine schools selected for the 2010–2012 award, which will provide $19,300 scholarships for five students to work with Miami faculty members on collaborative research that extends throughout two summers and part-time during one academic year.

According to the Beckman Foundation, the Beckman Scholars Program is unique in terms of program scope, content and level of scholarship awards.

Miami was also the recipient of a 2003–2005 and a 2006–2008 Beckman Scholars Program award.

“The fact that Miami has received three awards from the Beckman Foundation speaks to the strength of our undergraduate programs in chemistry/biochemistry and the biological sciences and the dedication of many of Miami’s best scholars to mentoring undergraduates in their research labs,” said Chris Makaroff, chair of chemistry and biochemistry.

Miami faculty mentors involved in the program include: Luis Actis (microbiology); Mike Crowder, Ben Gung, Ann Hagerman, Scott Hartley, Gary Lorigan, Chris Makaroff and Michael Novak (chemistry and biochemistry); John Kiss, Quinn Li, Nicholas Money and Richard Moore (botany); and Katia Del Rio Tsonis, Richard Lee and Mike Robinson (zoology).

The undergraduate Beckman Scholars for 2010 are expected to be announced later this spring.
