Marching Band to perform in 2011 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade
May 20, 2010Macy’s announced that the Miami University Marching Band has been selected to be one of 10 bands to perform in the 2011 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade®.
According to the selection committee, Miami’s superior musical ability, marching and performance skills won them a slot in the legendary parade scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 24, 2011. They competed against 150 applicants nationwide.
“We are extremely proud to be selected to perform in the 2011 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade,” said Stephen Lytle, director of athletic bands at Miami. “The Miami University Marching Band is entering its 75th season and the current band remains true to the legacy of its alumni.”
The Macy’s Parade takes more than a year to plan with bands chosen over 18 months before their parade step-off. Miami’s band performed in the 2003 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
“We are thrilled that the Miami University Marching Band will be returning to perform in the Macy’s Parade in 2011. They continue to demonstrate exemplary musical and marching abilities, in addition to incredible entertainment value. We look forward to their New York City performance in front of millions of spectators next year,” said Wesley Whatley, associate creative director of Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Lytle added, “This honor simply reflects the work and dedication of thousands of former band members as well as the leadership of A.D. Lekvold, Nicholas Poccia, Jack Liles and David Shaffer. We are eager to represent Miami University in front of millions of local spectators as well as the millions who will watch on live television.”
