Miami football and basketball among highlights of APR results
Jun 10, 2011The NCAA released its Academic Progress Rate report earlier this week,
showing that every Miami University sports team easily surpassed the
NCAA cutoff score and also that all of the 15 squads exceeded the
national average for public universities in their sports.
The RedHawk softball, men’s cross country and men’s golf teams led
the way with perfect scores of 1,000, followed by volleyball (995),
field hockey (993), women’s swimming (989), men’s track and field (985)
and women’s tennis (984). Of those eight exceptional scores, softball
improved its score by 118 points.
Miami’s high-profile sports, men’s basketball and football, had
respective scores of 976 and 970, and both ranked second among their
Mid-American Conference peers. Both RedHawk teams far exceeded the
national averages of 945 for basketball and 946 for football.
The remaining Miami sports’ scores include men’s swimming (971),
women’s track and field (970), baseball (967) and women’s basketball
(960). Ice hockey and synchronized skating are not included in the
NCAA’s survey.
The NCAA marks are a four-year composite, covering the 2006-07,
2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10 school years, that measures academic
eligibility and retention of student-athletes. The NCAA cutoff score for
each sport is 925.
With each team far exceeding the NCAA target score, no RedHawk
squads are subject to penalties, such as scholarship reductions or
postseason restrictions. None of Miami’s teams have incurred a penalty
during the seven-year history of the APR.
