Siok Lian Tan OMTA Teacher of the Year

Siok Lian Tan, associate professor of music and instructor of piano, has been named as the Ohio Music Teachers Association (OMTA) Collegiate Certified Teacher of the Year. She was selected based on professional achievement, excellence in teaching and professional service to the field of music teaching.

Tan was cited by Michael Benson, OMTA state chair of certification, for her “dedication to the arts of music education” and her work in the Music Teachers National Association (MYNA) by Michael Benson, OMTA state chair of certification.

She teaches applied piano and piano pedagogy, as well as coordinates the class piano program at Miami’s department of music. She holds a doctorate of musical in piano from University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM).

A native of Penang, Malaysia, Tan went to Cincinnati in 1988 as a scholarship student of Frank Weinstock at CCM. She has been heard in live broadcasts on Cincinnati Public Radio Station WGUC and has appeared as soloist with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Oxford Chamber Orchestra, and Miami University Symphony Orchestra. An active pianist, Tan has presented solo and chamber music concerts in major cities such as New York, Chicago, Luxembourg, Cologne, Cape Town, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Adelaide, and London, including a solo recital at the St. Martin-in-the-Fields concert series.
