  Miami University senior Dirk Auman, a biochemistry and engineering physics double major and computer science minor from Reynoldsburg, has been awarded an Astronaut Scholarship from the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation (ASF). He is one of 28 students nationwide to be selected for the $10,000 scholarship by ASF for the 2013-2014 academic year.

  Twenty-eight incoming freshmen on the football, men's basketball and women's basketball teams participated in a community service project with the Oxford Family Resource Center on Saturday. "The student athletes were unbelievable with their effort, attitudes and representation of Miami athletics," said Craig Bennett, assistant athletic director for academic support services.

  Miami University, called "the honors public university in one of the nation's largest states," is included in the Fiske Guide to Colleges' list of the "best and most interesting colleges and universities" in the country for 2014. The Guide also recognizes Miami's architecture, business and music programs as being strong.

  The National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) Board of Directors named longtime Miami University administrator Josh Fenton conference commissioner. Fenton will begin his appointment as commissioner on July 15.

  James Oris, associate provost for research, dean of the Graduate School and professor of zoology; and Sheila Croucher, professor of American studies, have been awarded the title of University Distinguished Professor by Miami University's board of trustees, effective July 1, 2013.   
06/21/2013  Tuition and budget set; new names for several university areas  
  Miami University trustees voted June 21 to raise tuition 1.5 percent, or $199, for the 2013-2014 school year for undergraduates at the Oxford campus. In-state students will pay $13,266 in tuition; out-of-state students will pay $29,056, also a 1.5 percent increase. The state legislature had approved increases of up to 2 percent but, through efficiencies achieved on campus and an ideal to keep tuition affordable, the university aimed for a more modest increase.

  U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan held a town hall meeting at Miami University Middletown Thursday, June 20. His visit focused on the importance of expanding early learning opportunities for all children, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

  Like other Miami students, Aaron Pittenger wondered about the music he heard when he walked around campus. During a communications class, he went to the Pulley Tower and met then-carillonneur Randy Runyon, professor of French and Italian. Visiting Runyon at the carillon later during Sunday recitals, Pittenger learned that systems running the music were obsolete and cumbersome to use.

  Four Miami University students have received Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships to help fund their summer and fall study abroad experiences. The nationally competitive scholarships are awarded twice a year.

  A "one-size-fits-all" approach appears to not be the best practice when marketing to the LGBT consumer. Miami University's Gillian Oakenfull suggests that tailored communication recognizing differences between lesbians and gay men would be more impactful.

  Services are scheduled for Thursday, June 13, for Charlie Coles, Miami University men's basketball coach, who who died Friday, June 7. Coles, 71, was an all-time leader in wins and the Mid-American Conference record holder for career conference wins.

  Miami University captured its fifth Fred Jacoby Trophy for having the best overall women's athletic teams during the 2012-13 academic year.

  Blending personal and team success, integrity, dedication and inspiration at four different universities as a head coach, Miami University legend Bill Mallory was inducted into the Mid-American Conference Hall of Fame.   
05/27/2013  Assistance provided to fraternity members; fire investigation continues  
  While Oxford and state fire officials continue to investigate the cause of the Saturday morning (May 25) fire at the Phi Gamma Delta (Fiji) house on High St. in Oxford, Miami has begun assisting the students who resided there in their academic and personal needs. While relieved that no one was injured or killed, Miami staff realize the great personal toll it takes to suddenly lose clothes, computers and other personal property.

  For a record-setting fourth consecutive semester, Miami University's student-athletes recorded an all-time best cumulative grade-point average. This spring's cumulative GPA was 3.238 (4.0 scale).

  Artwork by Susan Ewing, associate dean of the School of Creative Arts and Miami University Distinguished Professor of Art, and Geoff Riggle, visiting assistant professor of art, has been selected for the Ohio Designer Craftsmen's "Best of 2013" exhibition at the Ohio Craft Museum in Columbus. The exhibition runs through June 23.   
05/13/2013  Ohio makes progress in delivering long-term services; challenges remain  
  Despite a large increase in the older population, Ohio's Medicaid expenditures and utilization rates have remained relatively constant for long-term care services for people over the age of 60, says a new study by Miami University's Scripps Gerontology Center.
