Photography students involved in ‘Portrait of Liberty 2006’
Miami senior photography students will again work with Union County (Ind.) teens in a photography project. “Portrait of Liberty 2006: Past and Present” follows a successful 2005 collaboration.
For the 2006 project, participants will photograph Liberty and Union Co. people and places with an emphasis on personal history and life in the past. The 2006 focus grew from a 2005 experience, when a long-time resident took students on a tour of downtown and talked about how much the area and life had changed over the years. The project is based at the Union Co. Public Library with Ann Tobin, teen coordinator. “We would like to bring out history through reprinting old photographs, taking new comparative photographs and recording the histories and taking portraits of long-time residents,” says Tobin.
The Miami students, taught by Jon Yamashiro (art) are Rebecca Rosenzweig, Jane Swensson, Eric Spore, Mike Robbins, Laura Parrott, Sam Jones, Erin Holcomb, Angela Hagley, Megan Burke, Pam Bottles and Will Blake.
The project kicked off with a town portrait in September. The 15 teens will meet weekly for seven weeks with 11 Miami students to learn about photographing, editing, processing, printing, archiving, choosing and preparing images for an exhibit in December.
The project is funded in part by Arts Place Inc., the Indiana Arts Commission, National Endowment for the Arts and the Union County Foundation.
