Miami opera to present ‘Die Fledermaus’

Miami Opera Theatre will present Johann Strauss’ “Die Fledermaus” (“The Bat”) at 7:30 p.m. today through Saturday, Nov. 9-11, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12, in Hall Auditorium. The production will be sung in English.

The production is full of the waltz themes that made Strauss famous. It opened in Vienna in 1874 and played for only 16 performances, as the audience considered it too risqué. Soon after, it was performed in Berlin to great acclaim and is today considered a masterpiece of comic opera.

Director for the Miami production is Buz Davis, who also did lighting design. Davis chose to set “Die Fledermaus” in 1950s New Orleans. Ricardo Averbach is musical director and conductor of the Miami Orchestra. Numerous Miami students perform, with several roles double cast.

Mari Opatz-Muni is director of Miami’s opera program.

Tickets are $5 for students, $8 for senior citizens and $10 for other adults. Tickets are available at the box office in the Shriver Center, 9-3200, or online, www.tickets.muohio.edu.
