Accountancy programs still among the best

Undergraduate and master’s degree programs in accountancy in Miami’s Richard T. Farmer School of Business are ranked 12th and 15th, in the nation, respectively, by Public Accounting Report. The rankings were released Nov. 9.

Both programs moved higher compared with the PAR rankings for 2005. Last year the undergraduate program was listed at 13th and the master’s of accountancy (MAcc) at 20th. The PAR, an independent newsletter of the accounting profession, surveys accounting professors, department heads and chairs nationwide and asks them to assess those accountancy programs they feel most consistently turn out students capable of someday attaining partner status. It is the 25th annual survey.

“A large factor in the success of our programs is the quality of our students and our faculty,” said Marc Rubin, chair of accountancy. “When you have great students being engaged by dynamic, enthusiastic professors who love to teach, the results are fantastic.”

Rubin said that the curriculum at both undergraduate and graduate levels is under constant review to make sure it is comprehensive and up to date. Strong relationships with public accounting firms and professionals add an essential practitioner dimension to what is covered in the classroom.

“But, when all is said and done, how we teach is just as important as what we teach,” Rubin said. “Our faculty is absolutely committed to turning out the very best professional accountants.”

“The accountancy department’s commitment to student learning through active engagement — both inside and outside the classroom — is impressive,” said Farmer School Dean Roger Jenkins. “Theirs is a continued quest for excellence.”
