Nick Clooney to speak on Darfur
Journalist Nick Clooney will present “A Newsman on Darfur” at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, in 100 Laws Hall.
Clooney, a veteran TV and print journalist in Cincinnati and other markets, began working to draw attention to the civil war in Darfur after a nine-day trip to the region last April with his son, actor George Clooney.
During their trip to Sudan and Chad, the senior Clooney interviewed victims of civil strife while his son filmed interviews. That work led to a June 2006 exhibit at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati titled “In Search of Darfur”; extensive media coverage; and dozens of speaking engagements. The cable network AmericanLife TV has begun airing a half-hour documentary of their trip called “A Journey to Darfur.”
The Clooneys’ efforts focus on the conflict that has killed an estimated 400,000 people and displaced another 2 million.
“Darfur is never going to take the place of Iraq or Afghanistan on top of the news,” Clooney recently told the Associated Press. “I want to get politicians’ constituents talking about this, to get it to bubble up from underneath and onto their agenda.”
Free and open to the public.
