Hongcai Zhou

Hongcai “Joe” Zhou has been granted tenure and promoted to associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry.

Zhou graduated from Texas A&M University with a Ph.D. as a George W. Kunze Prize winner in 2000. He spent two years at Harvard University as a postdoctoral fellow before joining the faculty of Miami in 2002.

His research focuses on biomimetic approaches to materials chemistry. Zhou and coworkers published 25 Miami-based research papers in peer-reviewed science journals including one in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, five in the Journal of the American Chemical Society and three in Angwandte Chemie, International Edition.

He has taught eight different undergraduate/graduate courses, including two that he developed at Miami. He has mentored 20 undergraduate researchers, eight graduate students and three postdoctoral fellows.

Zhou started a teaching-research partnership program with Talawanda High School, which aims at training high-school teachers in research-based teaching. Zhou’s work was recognized by a Research Innovation Award from Research Corporation in 2003, an NSF CAREER Award in 2005, a Cottrell Scholar Award from Research Corporation in 2005 (one among 13 nationally), and a Miami University Distinguished Scholar Award for a junior faculty in 2006. He has also brought in more than $700,000 of external funding to Miami.
