Columnist George Will to speak April 3
Columnist, commentator and author George Will will speak at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, at Millett Hall. His speech on “The Political Argument Today” is free and open to the public.
A contributing editor for Newsweek magazine since 1976, Will also is a member of the Washington Post Writers Group, writing a syndicated, twice-weekly column circulated among more than 450 newspapers across the country.
He won a Pulitzer Prize in 1977 for “distinguished commentary on a variety of topics” for his newspaper columns, and he has earned awards for his Newsweek columns, including a finalist citation in the Essays and Criticism category of the 1979 National Magazine Awards competition. In addition to other awards, he was named among the 25 most influential Washington journalists by the National Journal in 1997.
A founding member of the panel on ABC’s “This Week with David Brinkley” in 1981, he is still a regular panelist on the show, now titled “This Week with George Stephanopoulos.”
Will has published seven collections of his Newsweek and newspaper columns; other books include The New Season: A Spectator’s Guide to the 1988 Election (1987) and Men at Work: The Craft of Baseball (1989), which topped national best-seller lists for more than two months.
His appearance is sponsored by Thomas W. Smith, a 1950 Miami graduate.
