Academic procession to begin convocation

An academic procession from the Hub near Roudebush Hall to Millett will kick off university convocation at 8:15 a.m. Friday, Aug. 17. Keynote speakers Dave Eggers, author of this year’s summer reading selection, What is the What, and Alex Pial, a survivor of the atrocities in Sudan, will speak at 9 a.m. Student discussion sessions with faculty and staff volunteers follow from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Eggers also will appear at a special event presented by the Roger and Joyce Howe Center for Writing Excellence from noon to 2 p.m. in 112 Marcum Center Aug. 17. Inspired by his passion for writing, Eggers founded community writing centers for children 6 to 18 in seven cities, including Los Angeles, New York and Chicago. The centers offer drop-in tutoring, field trips, workshops and in-schools programs for children, classes, and schools with particular interests or needs. Eggers’ presentation, “Writing Centers and the Community,” is open to the public. Contact Kate Francis, francik@muohio.edu, to RSVP.
