Howe Center grants to improve student writing

Miami’s Roger and Joyce Howe Center for Writing Excellence has announced 2007 grants for yearlong projects that departments and individual faculty will use to incorporate more effective writing activities and assignments into programs and courses.

The teacher education department will use a $5,000 grant to design and test writing-to-learn assignments throughout undergraduate courses in reading education. The sociology and gerontology department will use a $5,000 grant to improve and integrate writing assignments in the master’s of gerontological studies program.

Five $2,000 grants will support faculty in developing better ways to use writing in their courses. Recipients include Brenda Dales (teacher education), Kathleen Hutchinson (speech pathology and audiology), Harvey Thurmer (music) and Roscoe Wilson (art-Miami Hamilton). The fifth $2,000 grant was awarded to Stacy Brinkman (university libraries) and Ben Jacks (architecture and interior design).

The Howe Center will accept applications for grants for the 2008-2009 academic year in spring semester. Information is available at
