Baxter-Magolda receives achievement award
Marcia Baxter-Magolda, Distinguished Professor of Educational Leadership at Miami University, received the Research Achievement Award from the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE). The award is presented for outstanding contribution to research for an individual whose published research advances higher education.
“They could not have picked a better candidate,” said Carine Feyten, dean of the School of Education and Allied Professions. “This is quite an honor and a well deserved recognition for someone who tirelessly focuses her attention on contributing new knowledge to the field.”
Baxter-Magolda, who joined Miami in 1983, teaches student development theory and inquiry courses in the college student personnel master’s degree program. She received her master’s and Ph.D. in higher education from Ohio State University. Her scholarship addresses the evolution of learning and development in college and young adult life, the role of gender in development and pedagogy to promote self-authorship.
Baxter-Magolda is the author of six books including Learning Partnerships: Theory and Models of Practice to Educate for Self-Authorship (Stylus Press, 2004) and Making Their Own Way: Narratives for Transforming Higher Education to Promote Self-Development (Stylus Press, 2001). Her vita also includes 31 refereed articles in publications such as the Journal of College Student Development, Review of Higher Education and the Educational Psychologist. She also is author of 21 book chapters and 11 book review essays. She currently serves as the executive editor of About Campus.
Other awards and recognition include receiving the National Association of Student Personnel Administrator’s Robert H. Schaffer Award in 2002, the American College Personnel Association’s Contribution to Knowledge Award in 2003, Distinguished Professor at Miami in 2003 and Miami’s Benjamin Harrison Medallion in 2002. Baxter-Magolda also is one of the principal investigators in the Wabash National Study of Liberal Arts Education.
