NMR spectrometer lab dedicated
Miami officially opened its new nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer lab Nov. 14 with an academic symposium and ribbon-cutting. The 850 MHz NMR in the basement of Hughes Labs will be the nucleus for research collaborations uniting Michael Kennedy, Miami’s Eminent Scholar in Structural Biology, with scientists at the children’s hospitals in Cincinnati, Cleveland and Columbus. They will work to develop metabolic profiles and discover diagnostic markers of several children’s diseases.
Kennedy also brings Miami into the nine-member Northeast Structural Genomics consortium (NESG), which will solve protein structures for the national Protein Structure Initiative.
“One of the goals of the eminent scholar program is not only to bring someone to campus so they can do good things, but to be a catalyst for things both on campus and outside campus,” said President David Hodge at the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
