Two students win Freeman-ASIA awards for study abroad in China
Rebekah Farrar and Tariq Lacy recently received Freeman Awards for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA).
Farrar is a senior majoring in French with a music performance minor. She earned a semester award of $5,000 and is participating in a program in China sponsored by the University Study Abroad Consortium. The program combines learning through formal academic coursework and direct personal experience gained through visits to sites of historical and cultural interest.
Lacy is a junior majoring in technical and scientific communication. He received a $3,000 award and last summer participated in an international workshop directed by Liang Shi (German, Russian and East Asian languages). The workshop, Summer Intensive Chinese, offered an opportunity to travel to China and to complete two semesters’ course work, as well as to interact with local people and make independent excursions.
Since the launch of the program in 2000, Freeman-ASIA has supported more than 3,000 U.S. undergraduates. The primary goal of the awards is to increase the number of U.S. undergraduates who study in East and Southeast Asia.
