Prytherch named 2009 outstanding professor

05/12/2009

David Prytherch
David Prytherch, assistant professor of geography, was named Miami University’s Outstanding Professor for 2009.

Prytherch was among 32 faculty nominated by graduating seniors for the award, presented by Associated Student Government (ASG). He was recognized at the Senior Last Lecture held May 1.

ASG secretary for academic affairs Bethany Bowyer (’10) read from student nominations for Prytherch, “a professor who approaches teaching as a partnership, a collaborative effort between himself and his students and makes learning exciting.”

Students wrote:

“He offers more than knowledge, his teaching enhances creativity, sparks interest and uncovers talents,” and “His innovative thinking made me want more out of life than just a job. He taught me that I could use my talents and skills to make a difference in this world.”

Prytherch is an urban and political geographer who studies the role of city planning in social and spatial change. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Pennsylvania State University and worked for the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection before earning a master’s and doctorate from the University of Arizona. His doctoral research on regionalist politics and landscape planning in Valencia, Spain, was funded by a Fulbright.

Prytherch joined the Miami faculty in 2003. He teaches a wide range of courses in the urban and regional planning program and engages students in real-world urban issues as a way to better understand how cities have evolved and are shaped through planning. He serves on the city of Oxford Planning Commission.

Prytherch has been granted tenure and promoted to associate professor, effective in July.
