The First Friday Concert Series features the steel drums and vocals of Dave Leisten from during the noon hour. He will bring the tropics to Miami Middletown Downtown. Leisten is a popular entertainer throughout the tri-state and Band Director at Middletown High School. The Booking It! Non-Fiction Book Conversations group will meet at 5 p.m. to discuss Conquering Gotham: Building Penn Station and Its Tunnels by Jill Jonnes. Set in New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C., Conquering Gotham is the history of a political and engineering battle that forever changed New York's physical and psychological geography. Learn how the Pennsylvania Railroad secretly assembled land for a terminal in the Tenderloin vice district, taking on J.P. Morgan, Andrew Carnegie, Teddy Roosevelt and Boss William Croker. A community forum will meet at 5:30 pm to discuss the Downtown Stories, Community Visions project. Project organizer Leah DePriest, is a graduate student in Urban Planning at Miami University. The project seeks to give the community an active voice in establishing a common vision for the future of downtown Middletown. The community is invited to share stories and opinions about downtown Middletown with DePriest. Ultimately, the information DePriest gathers may aid city planners and designers in downtown revitalization efforts. This is the first of four free community forums. The Illuminati Writing Group will meet at 2 p.m. This casual writing and workshopping group is for all levels and genres of writing.
