Barbara Tonner and Bill Zehler of Miami University’s physical facilities department received two awards from The Des Fleurs Garden Club of Oxford this year for their landscaping work at the university.

Tonner, building and grounds specialist, and Zehler, horticulturalist, plant and maintain many annual flowers across campus. They received a Landscaping Certificate for their work at Lewis Place and a second certificate for their work at the Formal Gardens and the campus flowerbeds.

Zehler said plans for next year are in the works. “We produce most of our stock from seed that we start over the winter in our two greenhouses back by the Formal Gardens. We will have the standard red/white begonias in the Pearson bed with the old style 'M'. We use red and gold at the bookstore corner. There should be lots of trailing petunias. But, the rest is a surprise. We don’t divulge our plans for the upcoming year. We like to surprise people. And, it also depends on the success of the flower crop.”

The Des Fleurs Garden Club community awards program presents certificates of recognition to reward and encourage those whose landscaping and floral displays are outstanding and can be enjoyed by everyone in the community.
