Miami opera: "Suor Angelica" and "Gianni Schicchi"

Miami University’s department of music will present two one-act operas, “Suor Angelica” and “Gianni Schicchi” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 19–21, in Hall Auditorium.

Mihaela Bogdan, visiting international scholar, is the stage director. Bogdan, a graduate of the Indiana University opera program, is resident stage director of the Romanian National Opera Cluj. Benjamin Smolder, associate professor of music, is music director and conductor for “Suor Angelica,” which will be sung in Italian with English supertitles. Ricardo Averbach, associate professor of music and the conductor of Miami’s symphony orchestra, is the music director and conductor for “Gianni Schicchi,” which will be sung in English. Mari Opatz-Muni is the director of Miami’s opera program.

Written by Italian composer Giacomo Puccini, both operas made their world premiere at the Metropolitan Opera in 1918. “Suor Angelica” (“Sister Angelica”) and “Gianni Schicchi” (pronounced “Johnny Skeekee”) are two of the three one-act operas featured in Puccini's “Il Trittico.” The stories depict divergent paths to heaven and hell, combining the tragic story of a nun in “Suor Angelica” who must deal with a great personal tragedy with the broad comedy of a greedy family that is humiliated by the crafty Gianni Schicchi.

Tickets, $12 for adults, $10 for senior citizens and $8 for students, are available at the Miami University box office, 529-3200 or online,
