Miami Provost Jeffrey Herbst to be president of Colgate University

Provost Jeffrey Herbst
Jeffrey Herbst, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at Miami University, has been named president of Colgate University beginning July 1, 2010.

Herbst became Miami’s provost in July 2005, and has helped to build Miami’s quality through initiatives including: the adoption of the Global Miami Plan, a new scholarship policy that allows students to utilize their scholarships for study abroad; the implementation of Miami’s Top 25 initiative; a comprehensive review of graduate programs; new policies that eliminate the distinction between academic and other integrity violations; clarified norms and expectations for faculty workload; development of new appointment structures that encourage interdisciplinary scholarship; and the opening of the Voice of America Learning Center.

At Miami, Herbst also helped shape the university’s involvement in the new University System of Ohio, established an academic affiliation with the Institute of Buddhist Dialectics in Tibet among other actions to expand study abroad opportunities, and has overseen the work of a regional campus committee that has made recommendations to integrate systems at the campuses and increase autonomy.

He has maintained his academic scholarship, publishing on topics related to political leadership in sub-Saharan Africa.

Herbst will continue at Miami through the spring 2010 semester. A search for a new provost will begin immediately, with a committee chaired by Carine Feyten, dean of Education, Health and Society.

Miami President David Hodge announced the news to Miami administrators this afternoon, saying, “I am very proud to share (this news) with you. Please join me in congratulating Jeff on his new position and in wishing him the best as he begins his tenure at Colgate.”
