University invites participation in making MLK Day holiday "A day on, not a day off"

01/11/2010

Miami University’s office of community engagement and service, with the office of diversity affairs, invites students, staff and faculty on all campuses to volunteer on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 18, connecting to a national MLK Day of Service.

Initiated by Congress in 1994, the MLK Day of Service is a nationwide effort to transform the federal holiday honoring Martin Luther King Jr. into a day of community engagement grounded in King’s teachings.

The MLK Day of Service is to remind us that the holiday is not simply a day off from school or work, but a chance for millions of Americans to make this “a day on.”

Local volunteer opportunities will be on a first-come first-served basis. For more information, please contact Jamie Calobrisi at the office of community engagement and service at 529-2961 or calobrjc@muohio.edu.

By participating in the MLK Day of Service, volunteers can earn a free admission ticket to Disney with the program Give a Day, Get a Disney Day! To register for Give a Day, Get a Disney Day and for more information, go to DisneyParks.disney.go.com, click on “Start Now”, and click on “Give & Get” (on the top of the page). Enter your zip code in the bottom left search box and click “find an activity.” Scroll to the bottom of the page and “click here” under “Not finding enough opportunities?” Find the office of community engagement and service, and follow the directions under “Get Started.”

Organizers also ask for collaboration of ideas: If you have an idea about how to make this day more of a success, they encourage you to contact Calobrisi at (513) 529-2961 or calobrjc@muohio.edu.
