Margaret O’Dougherty Wright
Margaret O’Dougherty Wright has been promoted to professor of psychology. She earned a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota and completed her clinical internship at the Neuropsychiatric Institute at UCLA. Following an appointment at The Ohio State University in the department of pediatrics, she joined Miami in 1990. Currently she is the director of clinical training in psychology. Her research focuses on the long-term consequences of trauma, particularly trauma that occurs within the family such as sexual, physical and emotional abuse. She explores factors that promote resilience following abuse experiences as well as factors that lead to continued vulnerability for adult survivors. Her research focuses on protective factors such as supportive responses to abuse disclosure, personal relationships, coping skills, spirituality and meaning making. Wright has edited a book and numerous articles focusing on resilience and recovery from child maltreatment. She also serves on the editorial board of several prominent journals in the area of child abuse and has published numerous chapters focusing on resilience across the lifespan that have appeared in leading handbooks in these areas.
