Jiexia (Elisa) Zhai, assistant professor of sociology and gerontology at Miami University and member of Miami’s new Asian and Asian American studies program, is one of 16 scholars to receive a $100,000 grant for her research on the spread of the Chinese indigenous Pentecostal and charismatic movement in the East Asian Chinese community.

The two-year research project is in collaboration with J. Gordon Melton, Distinguished Senior Fellow at the Institute for Studies of Religion at Baylor University and founding director of the Institute for the Study of American Religion.

Zhai joined the Miami faculty in fall 2009. She received her doctorate from the University of Texas, Austin and was a postdoctoral fellow at Baylor University.

The research initiative on Pentecostal and Charismatic Christianity is supported by a grant from the John Templeton Foundation through the Center for Religion and Civic Culture at the University of Southern California.
