Miami's IT services moved the myMiami intranet to a higher capacity server overnight Aug. 25 after heavy user load was causing delays with login. The move seemed to alleviate problems, officials said.
MyMiami usage has increased with more intense use of Blackboard, Miami's online course management system. In spring semester 2006, there were approximately 2,955 courses by 1,197 faculty in Blackboard. Over the 2005-2006 school year, 88 percent of students had at least one course using Blackboard. The average student used Bb in 3.03 courses.
The IT services support desk also records heavy use at the start of semesters. The number of calls and e-mails to the support desk for technology-related assistance totaled 35,314 for FY06. Later this year, the IT services support desk will expand operations to 24 hours per day five days per week, plus weekend hours, to meet growing need for around-the-clock support. The extended hours will be phased in over this semester and will be fully in place by start of second semester.
Academic technology services added a new research computing support unit last spring with a full-time staff of four to provide support for faculty and staff engaged in research. Central to this effort was the purchase and installation of a High Performance Computing Cluster. Following its installation in mid-March, more than 60 users have requested accounts, more than 4,400 jobs have been submitted and more than 36,000 hours of processing have been clocked.
