Ryan Barilleaux named 2010 Effective Educator

Ryan Barilleaux
Ryan Barilleaux, Miami University professor of political science, is the recipient of the 2010 Effective Educator Award by Miami's Alumni Association. Barilleaux will be recognized during the RedHawks' Oct. 23 Homecoming football game versus Ohio University.

A member of Miami’s faculty since 1987, Barilleaux served as chair of the department of political science from 2001 to 2009. He is the author or editor of nine books on the U.S. presidency and American politics; has published dozens of articles on the American presidency, religion and politics; and his research has been recognized for excellence by professional associations. He is currently writing a book, Tough Times for the President, which examines how presidents respond to situations of political adversity.

A 1997 recipient of the Outstanding Teacher Award from the Miami University Associated Student Government, Barilleaux was one of 34 faculty and staff members nominated by alumni from the Class of 2006. It was Barilleaux’s fifth overall and third consecutive nomination for the honor, which was won last year by Jon Yamashiro, associate professor of art.

The nominations lauded Barilleaux for his active engagement of students in the classroom and for his ability to appraise current events and readily identify their historic significance.

"When I walked in Dr. Ryan Barilleaux's American Political System course, I was instantly captivated by both the lectures and the reading material. The professor's lectures brought the material to life," said Kelly Mills, Miami ‘02.

Brendan Carver, Miami ’02, wrote, "Dr. Barilleaux was a constant reminder of how professors, with the right balance of academic curiosity and reverence for pragmatism in the classroom can keep students engaged. He was the sole reason I changed majors from education to political science, and am now a practicing attorney."

Barilleaux and his wife Marilyn have six children, two of whom are Miami alumni and three who are students at Miami.

The Effective Educator Award was established by the Miami University Alumni Association in 1983 to honor individuals at Miami who educate and inspire students to new heights. Members of that year’s five-year reunion class nominate each recipient.
