Miami University now hosts 840 international students from 69 countries. Along with their academic studies, these students want to learn about the American culture with the help of faculty and staff through programs sponsored by the office of international education (OIE).
“These students have conquered language barriers, among other obstacles, to find their way to Oxford, Ohio,” Wynona Little of the office of international education said. “But their education does not need to be limited to the classroom. Many of these students have expressed interest in learning more about American culture and sharing their own culture with local American friends."
OIE Friend Program
One program matches faculty and staff with students. Become a friend to an international student by sharing some time with someone who is a long way from home. Contact either Wynona Little in the office of international education at 529-5628 or share your interest with COSEP-Global Friendships liaison Corrine Kidd 675-3909.
OIE Thanksgiving Dinner Host Program
One excellent way to share American culture with an international student is treating him or her to a traditional Thanksgiving feast. The office of international education is seeking faculty, staff, emeriti and Oxford community members to host international students for a Thanksgiving meal this year.
Many international students are eager to learn about American traditions and taste a real home-cooked Thanksgiving meal. OIE would like to pair Miamians and Oxfordians with international students to share this quintessential American tradition and foster relationship building across cultures. This is not a home-stay program but a one-day home-visit program for a Thanksgiving meal.
If you are hosting or attending a Thanksgiving meal in or near Oxford this year, and would like to invite an international student to join you, please e-mail Stefanie Stauber, OIE student adviser, at email@example.com, with the following information:
1. Number of students interested in sponsoring
2. Date/Time of the event
3. If you are able to provide transportation for the student(s) to and from the event.
Deadline to register as a host for the Thanksgiving dinner program is by 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12.
