Miami University is holding Veterans Day Celebrations on Thursday, Nov. 11: beginning at 11:30 a.m. on the Oxford and Hamilton campuses; 10 a.m. and noon on the Middletown Campus; and 12:15 p.m. at the Voice of America Learning Center. All events are free and open to the public.
In addition, the university collected pictures of employees, students, and their family members who are veterans or who are on active duty to create a slideshow to be shown at all the ceremonies, as well as featured on a special website.
President David Hodge will welcome Sen. Gary Cates (R- OH) and John E. Dolibois, Miami ’42 to the Oxford campus ceremony in the Shriver Center Heritage Room.
Dolibois is a retired U.S. Army captain and intelligence officer, former U.S. Ambassador to Luxembourg, and former vice president of Miami. Dolibois was instrumental in the establishment of the Miami University European Center, named in his honor. He is the last living of five Nazi interrogators from the Nuremberg Trials.
Cates is currently in his second Senate term, representing Ohio’s 4th Senate District, which includes all of Butler County. He is chairman of the senate education committee for the 128th General Assembly, and also serves on the finance and financial institutions committee, the highways and transportation and the environment and natural resources committees.
The Hamilton Campus observance will be held in the Schwarm Hall Commons. The event features the AMVETS (or American Veterans) Honor Guard and student Army veteran Lance Samples.
The Middletown campus will hold two programs. The first begins at the Middletown Chapter of the American Legion (Main Street) and then moves to the Woodside Cemetery. At noon, an event will occur at the Miriam G. Knoll Campus & Community Center in Johnston Hall. Special guests will include student veteran Robbie Horn and Paul Allen, commander, U.S. Navy (retired) and former executive officer, Navy ROTC Unit, at Miami.
The Voice of America Learning Center celebration will be held in the auditorium. Rep. Bill Coley (R- OH) will attend along with two trustees, Lee Wong (West Chester Township) and David Kern (Liberty Township) – both veterans – who will present proclamations to American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars representatives.
