University Senate action Nov 8

On Monday, Nov. 8, Miami University Senate heard several reports, including a report on the residence hall renovation project from David Creamer, vice president for finance and business services, Robert Keller, associate vice president for facilities planning and operations, and Peter Miller, associate vice president for auxiliaries.

Senate also heard reports from Interim Provost John Skillings and Stephen Wright, chair, Executive Committee of University Senate.

With the approval of the Oct. 25, 2010, minutes, Senate adopted Senate Resolution SR 11-07; a resolution revising the membership of Faculty Assembly to include Lecturers (including the Senior rank) and Clinical/Professionally Licensed Faculty (including the Senior rank).

Per the Enabling Act of University Senate and Faculty Assembly, Article Seven, Section 2, a hearing on the amendment to the Enabling Act is scheduled to be held at 3:15 p.m. Nov. 22, Harrison Hall, Oxford Campus.

Whereas the Miami University Policy and Information Manual (Sections 7.11.C.5 and 7.11.D.4) states that Lecturers and Clinical/Professionally Licensed Faculty should be "as fully enfranchised as possible in the day-to-day life of the departments/programs with which they are affiliated";

Whereas these individuals should also be as fully enfranchised as possible in the academic divisions and across the university;

Whereas membership in Faculty Assembly recognizes the important contributions these full-time, continuing-contract individuals make to Miami University;

And whereas membership in Faculty Assembly gives these individuals a role in the governance of the University;

BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that University Senate adopt proposed revisions to the Enabling Act of University Senate and Faculty Assembly, Introductory Article, as set forth below:

Faculty Assembly is composed of all members of the faculty who hold tenure or a tenure-track position; all librarians who hold the rank of Principal Librarian, Associate Librarian, or Assistant Librarian; and all members of the faculty who hold the rank of Lecturer (including the Senior rank) and Clinical/ Professionally Licensed Faculty (including the Senior rank). Faculty Assembly hears reports from its committees and from the President, the Chair of University Senate, and Vice Presidents. It may propose, debate, and recommend matters for University Senate consideration or for presentation to other officials or administrative bodies. It may also challenge and refer back to Senate any Senate action. Faculty Assembly has the right of initiative and referendum.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that University Senate adopt proposed revisions to the Enabling Act of University Senate and Faculty Assembly, Article Four, Section 2, Faculty Assembly Membership, as set forth below:

Faculty Assembly is composed of all members of the faculty who hold tenure or tenure-track positions; all librarians who hold the rank of Principal Librarian, Associate Librarian, or Assistant Librarian; and all members of the faculty who hold the rank of Lecturer (including the Senior rank) and Clinical/ Professionally Licensed Faculty (including the Senior rank).

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that University Senate adopt proposed revisions to the Miami University Policy and Information Manual, Section 2.5.A, Faculty Assembly, General, as set forth below:

Faculty Assembly includes all tenured and tenure-track faculty; all librarians who hold the rank of Assistant Librarian, Associate Librarian, or Principal Librarian; and all Lecturers (including the Senior rank) and Clinical/ Professionally Licensed Faculty (including the Senior rank).

SR 11-07 carried by a majority vote.

Twenty-five members of Faculty Assembly can challenge the resolutions by filing a petition with the Secretary of the University during the ten class days after publication in the e-Report.
