Graduate student wins Idaho violin competition

Jessica Cooley, a first-year graduate student studying violin, placed first in the Idaho Falls Symphony Young Artists competition last weekend. The competition is held every other year to encourage and reward promising young musical talent in Idaho.

Cooley is pursuing a master’s degree in music performance as a student of Harvey Thurmer, associate professor of music.

“Jessica is a great student. She’s very talented and very self-disciplined,” Thurmer said.

Cooley will return to Idaho Falls on Saturday, March 19, 2011 to perform the Sibelius Violin concerto with the Idaho Falls Symphony.
