Southard, art museum curator emeritus, to talk Nov. 18


Edna Southard, curator of collections emeritus, Miami University Art Museum, will present “Elephants, the Elephant Deity, and Popular Reverence in South India” at 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, at the museum.

Southard’s talk, which highlights her recent visit to India, will relate the stories of Ganesh with images of paintings from Orissa, large sculptures in temples in Tamil Nadu, plastic figurines given as gifts or placed on car dashboards and images advertising cigarettes.

Southard served for over 25 years as the curator of collections at the museum. She contributed a regular arts commentary on WMUB 88.5 FM; was an assistant professor in the department of art and has authored and co-authored countless gallery guides, catalogues and exhibition-related texts.
