Ethnomusicology Lecture: "Dance on the Danzon"

"Dance on with Danzon: Salsa Picante with Rice and Beans" is the topic of the annual ethnomusicology lecture presented by Thomas George Caracas Garcia, associate professor of music and Latin American studies, at 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, in the Shriver Center Heritage Room. The lecture is part of the UniDiversity program and the Passionate About Latin/o America and Caribbean Series.

Through musical examples, images and live performances, Garcia’s presentation will focus on some of the most important Latin American dance forms, including salsa, danzon, mambo, son, rumba and merengue. He will discuss the origins of and influences that drove the development of these genres — including race, slavery, African religious and dance music, Spanish colonial and indigenous cultures, migration and immigration — and how these traditions have influenced the classical music of Latin America.

Garcia’s talk, free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Center for American and World Cultures.
