"Art" selected for Kennedy Center honor

The Miami University department of theatre's production of Yasmina Reza's comedy "Art" was selected to perform in the regional round of the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. The production was selected from among 41 plays representing colleges from Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. "Art" will be performed twice on Friday, Jan. 7, 2011 in the Fairchild Theatre at Michigan State University as a part of the festival.

A team of respondents assembled by the Kennedy Center will view the production at the regional festival. After attending all eight regional festivals, the national selection team will choose four productions from across the country to be presented at the Kennedy Center in April.

The Miami production of "Art" opened Nov. 18, played seven performances and closed on Dec. 5. Two members of the regional selection committee attended the production.

"Art" tells the story of three men whose friendship is tested when one of them buys an expensive piece of art.

Directed by Lewis Magruder, assistant professor of theater at Miami, the cast includes students Aaron Epstein, Jim Watson and Brendan Monte.

The production includes student set designer Heather Weaver, faculty costume designer Letty Delgado and faculty lighting and sound designer Russ Blain.

Technical direction is by associate professor Steve Pauna. Student Jaqueline Smith serves as stage manager.
