Art Museum spring exhibitions open Jan. 11

New exhibition opens Jan. 11
"Looking Beyond the Surface:
Understanding Identity Through Art" is the theme of the Miami University Art Museum's spring 2011 exhibition series opening Jan. 11 and running through July 23. A public opening reception will be held 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20.

The suite of three exhibitions explores identity as a philosophical, psychological and social inquiry through both contemporary and historical perspectives.
“Understanding Thyself” features works by New York based super-realist painter and printmaker Audrey Flack, who explores her own identity through a series of self-portraits spanning the 1950s through 1990s.

“Capturing Identity” includes photographic portraits dating from the 1840s to the 1980s. The first permanent photograph was created in 1826. However, it was not until the 1840s that portrait photography evolved as a popular subject.

“Defining Identity” features a compilation of works from the museum’s permanent collections, exploring the topic of identity through a study of gender, race, culture, religion, social status and politics. Works on display extend back almost four thousand years and represent civilizations and countries across the globe.

The museum is free and open to the public Tuesdays through Saturdays. For more information go to
