Miami University’s microbiology department presented awards and scholarships to outstanding undergraduate and graduate students for spring semester.
The Orton K. Stark (OKS) Award, named for the founding chair of the microbiology department, is presented to students who have excelled in scholarship and leadership. Recipients of the OKS Senior Award were Christine Barrett, Michael Bucci, Anna Hang, Sankalp Malhotra and Chelsea Yanda.
The Outstanding First-Year OKS Award went to Ross Meadows and William Cash. The Outstanding Sophomore OKS Award went to Andrew Collinsworth, Madina Larina, Elizabeth Nykiel, Nicholas Parisey and Jon Wallace.
The OKS Graduate Student Award recipients were Racheal Desmone and Jenna Dohli. Desmone and Dohli are studying in the laboratories of Gary Janssen, professor of microbiology, and Rachael Morgan-Kiss, assistant professor of microbiology, respectively.
The Susan W. Rockwood Award is presented to female microbiology graduate students in recognition of excellence in teaching and research. Recipients were Jenna Dohli, Elizabeth French and Rachel Pritchard. French and Pritchard study in the laboratories of Annette Bollmann, assistant professor of microbiology, and Mitchell Balish, associate professor of microbiology, respectively.
The Lawrence Day Award recognizes juniors on the basis of academic merit. Recipients were William Comminos, Jason Chakroff, Megan Mackanos, Bridgette Rawlins, Nicole Studebaker, Lindsay Tirrell, Nathan Watrous and Michael Zatt.
The Dr. and Mrs. J.K. Bhattacharjee Scholarship recipients were Fredrick Bubolu, Dong Chen, Andrea Eam, Chad Liber, Viviana Salgado and Adam Spurling.
The Oren E. Taft Scholarships are presented to microbiology majors who demonstrate academic merit and plan on attending medical school. Recipients were Miles Hagner and Miranda Lazar.
