John Humphries selected 2011 artist of Malta

John Humphries, Miami University assistant professor in the department of architecture and interior design and affiliated with the Armstrong Institute for Interactive Media Studies, has been selected as the 2011 artist of Malta by the St. James Cavalier Foundation.

During the summer of 2011 a series of drawings related to built-form, sketches, and the natural environment will be completed over a six week period on the island and exhibited in the St. James Cavalier Gallery. The work will remain on display through the remainder of the year.

Humphries was the only visual artist in the last five years to be selected for this opportunity.

St. James Cavalier is Malta's Millennium Project — a Centre for Creativity. St. James is one of two Cavaliers built out of the originally projected nine by the Knights of Malta. It was designed by military engineer Francesco Laparelli de Cortona, who, on his departure from Malta in 1569, entrusted the continuation of his work to Maltese architect Gerolamo Cassar.

St James Cavalier, first opened its doors to the public in 2000. As the Maltese government's Millennium Project it has taken on the role of pushing forward Malta's cultural aspirations.

Now celebrating its 10th year, the centre has welcomed both local and foreign artists, writers, singers and actors, dancers, musicians as well as thinkers, scientists and other creators. It has staged operas and premiered plays, held major exhibitions of contemporary pieces as well as past masters.
