A sunny, warm afternoon added to the excitement of the crowd at the Armstrong Student Center groundbreaking Thursday afternoon at the hub.

Students group representatives processed to the site with silver buckets of dirt to dump in a ceremonial spot for the groundbreaking at what will be the northwest corner of the center.

Miami President David Hodge, Mike Armstrong, '61, trustee chair Don Crain, and Vice President for Student Affairs Barb Jones spoke, as did Nick Huber, Associated Student Government president, and Matthew Shroder, student trustee. Huber read statements from The Miami Student newspaper in which editors called for a new and larger gathering space for students, and then he let the crowd know it was from a 1946 article.

Four former ASG presidents, all of whom had advocated for a student center, participated in the ceremony.

The Armstrong Student Center is expected to open in January 2014.
