Miami opera presents "Pirates of Penzance"


The department of music will present its annual opera production, "The Pirates of Penzance" by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 10–12, in Hall Auditorium.

The production will feature select voice students from the department of music and members of the Oxford Chamber Orchestra.

“Pirates of Penzance” is stage directed and choreographed by visiting artist Nicholas Wuehrmann, who has directed both nationally and internationally. Wuehrmann, from New York City, has performed principal roles with Glimmerglass Opera and Cleveland Opera, among other groups.

Ricardo Averbach, associate professor of music and conductor of the Miami University Symphony Orchestra, is music director and conductor for the production. Lighting and set design is by Nicholas Muni, field service associate professor of opera and distinguished artist in residence at the College Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati. Costume design is by Joy Galbraith. Mari Opatz-Muni is the director of Miami’s opera program.

“Pirates of Penzance” premiered Dec. 31, 1879, at the Fifth Avenue Theater in New York, where it was a hit with audiences and critics.

Advance tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for senior citizens and $8 for students, and are available at the Miami University box office, 529-3200 or

Tickets will be available one hour prior to each performance at Hall Auditorium, $15 adults, $13 seniors, and $10 students. Group discounts are also available.

“The Pirates of Penzance” is one of the featured events of Miami's Year of the Arts celebration.
