Opera production of "Cendrillon" wins national award

The 2010 production of the Massenet's "Cendrillon" by Miami University Opera has been awarded second prize in the 2011 Opera Production Competition sponsored by the National Opera Association (NOA).

Judged by a panel of judges on “blind” DVD submissions against major university productions from around the country, Miami won in Category IV, and will be honored at a gala banquet at the NOA National Convention on January 7, 2012.

“I am thrilled,” writes Mari Opatz-Muni, director of the MU opera program, who, in announcing the news to the department, was quick to praise and thank her cast, crew, and orchestra. “It was a beautiful, quality production in every way – we should all be very proud. And,” she adds, “it is fabulous to be recognized by other professionals in the opera field.”

The award augments MU Opera’s recognition by the NOA in 2009 when the 2008 production of Benjamin Britten's Paul Bunyan won second place in Category III of that year's production competition.

Miami's Year of the Arts celebrates how the arts transform lives.
