Save money and energy by powering down computers and other office items during winter break.
Unplug “vampires” -- phone chargers, digital picture frames and similar items that don’t need to be plugged in while no one is there. Individual water coolers, copiers and printers can also be unplugged during the break to save energy. Classroom equipment should also be checked and turned off.
In the office, if possible, set back thermostats to 55 degrees while out of town. Also do this at home and keep bedroom doors open to ensure that heat circulates.
Make sure windows and doors are shut and locked to conserve heating and for safety.
Oxford police remind residents especially to make sure doors and first-floor windows are locked while they are sleeping or away, and if you’re leaving town for the holidays to take easily transported valuables with you.
Oxford police can conduct vacant house checks if you request them for the days you are away. You may request vacant house checks on the OPD website or by calling 524-5240.
