Next generation biofuels and materials topic of lecture

Martin Keller, associate laboratory director of the energy and sciences directorate, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), will present "An Integrated Biomass Strategy to Next Generation Biofuels and Materials" at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 29, in 116 Pearson Hall. His talk is the Distinguished Lecture in Microbiology.

Keller is responsible for the energy, biological, and environmental research programs at ORNL supported by the U.S.
Department of Energy (DOE), the Environmental Protection Agency, and the National Institutes of Health.

The directorate he heads includes four research divisions — Biosciences, Environmental Sciences, Energy and Transportation Science and Measurement Science and Systems Engineering — and several research centers including the DOE BioEnergy Science Center and the Climate
Change Science Institute.

He served as the founding director of the DOE BioEnergy Science Center, whose mission is to advance understanding and develop methods to convert biomass into sugars, to help replace imported petroleum with
ethanol and other fuels.
